GTA 6 Map Size: How Big Is Leonida?
Rockstar has never published an area figure for the State of Leonida. What exists is one developer quote, one measurement taken from leaked material, and a lot of sites presenting guesses as facts. Here is each number and how much weight it carries.

The short answer
Between 1.7 and 2 times the size of the GTA 5 map
The GTA 6 map is between 1.7 and 2 times the size of the GTA 5 map. Rockstar itself claims twice, and independent measurement of the leaked map lands nearer 1.7. Nobody has published a square kilometre figure for Leonida, so any site quoting one to two decimal places is inventing precision it does not have.
What each source actually says
These four claims are the whole evidence base. They are ordered by how much weight they deserve, and they do not all agree with each other.
- Reported Rob Nelson, Rockstar North
Twice the size of the GTA 5 map, three times the size of the Red Dead Redemption 2 map.
Said in a developer interview. Rockstar has published no square kilometre figure of its own.
- Reported Rob Nelson, Rockstar North
Vice City alone is twice the size of Los Santos.
Counting the surrounding suburbs, the same interview put the wider Vice City area at roughly eleven times Los Santos and its surroundings.
- Leaked Community measurement of leaked map material
About 83.2 km² of explorable land, roughly 1.73 times the land area of GTA 5.
Measured in August 2026 against the leaked map. Land only, so it is not directly comparable to the 75.84 km² total for GTA 5.
- Unconfirmed GTAForums analysis of engine units, 2024
About 125 km², roughly 2.6 times the land area of GTA 5.
Derived from the 2022 leaked footage before the map material surfaced, so it rests on a much thinner sample. Against the 75.84 km² GTA 5 total instead of its land, the same figure is 1.65 times.
Why the numbers disagree
Two of the claims cannot both be true under the usual figures. If Leonida is twice GTA 5 at 75.84 km², that is about 152 km². If it is three times Red Dead Redemption 2, and that map is commonly measured at 75 km², you get roughly 225 km². Those are not the same answer. The likeliest explanation is that the developer was speaking loosely about how the world feels to move through rather than quoting a surveyed area, and that the two comparisons use different notions of what counts as playable space. It is a reason to quote the claim, not to build a calculation on top of it.
Land, water, and why the comparison keeps breaking
Most arguments about GTA map size are really arguments about what to measure. GTA 5 is usually given as 75.84 km² total, of which 48.15 km² is land and 27.69 km² is ocean and lake. A separate widely quoted figure of about 127 km² for the same game uses a much larger bounding area. The community measurement of the leaked GTA 6 map, about 83.2 km², is explicitly land only. Set that against GTA 5 land at 48.15 km² and you get 1.73 times. Set it against the GTA 5 total instead and you get 1.1 times, which is where a lot of the confusion online comes from. Compare like with like or the number means nothing.
Every Rockstar map, measured
GTA V 48.15 km² (land only) GTA VI 83.2 km² (land only, estimated) | Game | Year | Total area | Relative size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto III | 2001 | 8.12 km² | |
| Grand Theft Auto: Vice City | 2002 | 9.11 km² | |
| Grand Theft Auto IV | 2008 | 16.14 km² | |
| Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas | 2004 | 38.2 km² | |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 2018 | 75 km² | |
| Grand Theft Auto V | 2013 | 75.84 km² | |
| Grand Theft Auto VI | 2026 | 83 to 152 km² | |
Size is not the same as density
A bigger map is not automatically a better one, and Rockstar has said more about density than about area. The claim that matters most is that Vice City alone is roughly twice the size of Los Santos, and that the city with its surrounding suburbs is around eleven times Los Santos and its surroundings. That is a statement about how much of the map is built-up rather than open country. The figure of 700 or more enterable interiors comes from insiders rather than from Rockstar, so treat it as unverified. What Rockstar has actually said is that this is the largest and most detailed world the studio has built.
How long will it take to drive across?
Nobody can answer this honestly yet, because road layout matters more than area and no complete road network has been shown. For reference, driving the length of the GTA 5 map takes roughly seven to nine minutes on the freeway. If Leonida is about twice the area, and if the road network is comparable in directness, the length of the state would take somewhere in the region of twelve to fifteen minutes. Both of those conditions are assumptions, so treat the range as an illustration rather than a specification.
What to tell someone who asks
That it is the biggest map Rockstar has made, that Rockstar says twice GTA 5, that measurement of leaked material says closer to 1.7, and that there is no official square kilometre number. Anyone who gives a single confident figure is either quoting a leak as gospel or making it up.
FAQ
How big is the GTA 6 map?
Rockstar says the Leonida map is twice the size of the GTA 5 map and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2. Measurements taken from leaked map material put the explorable land closer to 83 km², about 1.7 times the 48 km² of land in GTA 5. Rockstar has never published an official square kilometre figure.
Is the GTA 6 map bigger than GTA 5?
Yes. Every source agrees on that, and it is the largest world Rockstar has built. The disagreement is only about how much bigger: somewhere between 1.7 and 2 times, depending on whether you are measuring land, water or both.
How much bigger is the GTA 6 map compared to GTA 5?
Between 1.7 and 2 times, comparing land to land. Rockstar says twice the size of GTA 5. Community measurement of the leaked GTA 6 map puts the land at about 83 km² against 48 km² of land in GTA 5, which is 1.73 times. The 1.1 times figure that circulates compares GTA 6 land against the GTA 5 total including ocean, so it is not comparing the same thing.
What scale is the GTA 6 map drawn to?
Leonida is not real Florida at Florida’s scale. The real state runs about 720 km from the western panhandle to Miami and no game world is that large, so distances between regions are compressed and the panhandle sits far closer to the peninsula than it does in life. The map on this site keeps each place at the position of its real-world counterpart, warped onto the compact layout the leaked map shows.
