GTA 6 Map vs GTA 5
Every comparison of the GTA 6 map to GTA 5 online gives a different number, and they are mostly all quoting the same two claims with different arithmetic underneath. Here is each figure, what it measures, and which ones can be trusted.

The short answer
Between 1.7 and 2 times the size of the GTA 5 map
The GTA 6 map is between 1.7 and 2 times the size of the GTA 5 map. Rockstar says twice. Independent measurement of the leaked map says nearer 1.7. Both of those compare land to land. If you see 1.1 times, someone has compared GTA 6 land against the GTA 5 total including ocean, which is not a comparison of the same thing.
Why the same two maps produce four different ratios
GTA 5 is commonly given as 75.84 km² in total, of which 48.15 km² is land and 27.69 km² is water. A separate widely quoted figure of about 127 km² for the same game measures a much larger bounding box that includes ocean nobody plays in. The community measurement of the leaked GTA 6 map, about 83.2 km², is explicitly land only. Land against land gives 1.73 times. That land figure against the GTA 5 total gives 1.1 times. Rockstar twice against the GTA 5 total gives about 152 km². All four numbers circulate as if they answered the same question. They do not.
The two maps at one scale
Numbers are easy to argue with and a picture is not. Below, the GTA 5 map and the Leonida map are drawn at the same scale, with Leonida at the conservative 1.7 estimate. Comparison images circulating elsewhere routinely shrink GTA 5 much further than the measurements justify, which makes GTA 6 look larger than any source claims. This one does not.
GTA V 48.15 km² (land only) GTA VI 83.2 km² (land only, estimated) GTA 6 and GTA 5 side by side
| Game | Year | Total area | Relative size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto III | 2001 | 8.12 km² | |
| Grand Theft Auto: Vice City | 2002 | 9.11 km² | |
| Grand Theft Auto IV | 2008 | 16.14 km² | |
| Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas | 2004 | 38.2 km² | |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 2018 | 75 km² | |
| Grand Theft Auto V | 2013 | 75.84 km² | |
| Grand Theft Auto VI | 2026 | 83 to 152 km² | |
Size is the wrong question. Density is the right one
A bigger map is not automatically a better map, and GTA 5 already contained a great deal of empty desert. What Rockstar has said about GTA 6 is mostly about density rather than area. Vice City alone is reported at roughly twice the size of Los Santos, and the city with its surrounding suburbs at around eleven times Los Santos and its surroundings. That is a claim about how much of the world is built up, which matters far more to how a map feels than its outer dimensions. The figure of 700 or more enterable interiors comes from insiders rather than Rockstar, so treat it as unverified.
Water, keys and the parts you cannot drive
Leonida has considerably more usable water than Los Santos. The Leonida Keys trail off the southern tip as a real island chain, the Grassrivers wetlands are navigable rather than scenery, and Vice City is split by a bay with a barrier island on the ocean side. GTA 5 had ocean around a single island and one small lake. Comparing total area therefore flatters GTA 6 in one direction and comparing land only flatters it in another, which is the whole reason the ratio refuses to settle.
How much longer will it take to drive across?
Driving the length of the GTA 5 map takes roughly seven to nine minutes on the freeway. If Leonida is about twice the area and its road network is comparably direct, crossing the state would land somewhere around twelve to fifteen minutes. Both of those are assumptions, because no complete GTA 6 road network has been shown and road layout matters more than area. Treat the range as an illustration, not a specification.
What to tell someone who asks
That GTA 6 has the biggest map Rockstar has made, that Rockstar says twice GTA 5, that measurement of leaked material says closer to 1.7, that there is no official square kilometre figure for either the total or the land, and that the city inside it is the part that actually grew. Anyone giving a single confident number is either quoting a leak as gospel or making it up.
FAQ
How big is the GTA 6 map?
Rockstar says the Leonida map is twice the size of the GTA 5 map and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2. Measurements taken from leaked map material put the explorable land closer to 83 km², about 1.7 times the 48 km² of land in GTA 5. Rockstar has never published an official square kilometre figure.
Is the GTA 6 map bigger than GTA 5?
Yes. Every source agrees on that, and it is the largest world Rockstar has built. The disagreement is only about how much bigger: somewhere between 1.7 and 2 times, depending on whether you are measuring land, water or both.
How much bigger is the GTA 6 map compared to GTA 5?
Between 1.7 and 2 times, comparing land to land. Rockstar says twice the size of GTA 5. Community measurement of the leaked GTA 6 map puts the land at about 83 km² against 48 km² of land in GTA 5, which is 1.73 times. The 1.1 times figure that circulates compares GTA 6 land against the GTA 5 total including ocean, so it is not comparing the same thing.
Is Vice City bigger than Los Santos?
Reportedly yes, by roughly double, with the city and its surrounding suburbs at around eleven times Los Santos and its surroundings. Those figures come from reporting rather than from Rockstar directly. What Rockstar has said is that this is the largest and most detailed world the studio has built.
